Is Scuba Diving Safe for Beginners in Southwest Florida?
Absolutely — when done with a certified, experienced operator. Scuba diving has an excellent safety record when proper training protocols are followed, equipment is well-maintained, and dives are conducted within the limits of a diver’s training and experience.

The Discover Scuba Diving (DSD) experience is the perfect introduction if you want to try diving without committing to a full certification course. No prior experience or certification is required — just a minimum age of 10 years and basic comfort in the water.
Here’s what to expect on a Discover Scuba Diving experience with Cruise Fish Dive:
- A brief orientation covering the essential equipment: mask, fins, BCD, regulator, and tank
- Introduction to the five key skills: breathing through the regulator, clearing your mask, equalising your ears, using your BCD, and basic fin movement
- A confined water session in calm, shallow water where you practice until you’re comfortable
- An open water dive in the Gulf of Mexico with a certified instructor at your side the entire time
Most guests are in the water and breathing underwater within an hour of arriving with a reservation. It is genuinely one of the most memorable experiences you can have on a Southwest Florida vacation — and families are particularly welcome.
Option 2: PADI Open Water Diver Certification
If you want to walk away from your trip with a qualification that lets you dive anywhere in the world, the PADI Open Water Diver course is the answer. This is the world’s most recognised scuba certification, accepted by dive operators globally, with no expiry date.
The course at Cruise Fish Dive is structured as follows:
- Knowledge development — theory covering diving physics, physiology, equipment, and safety, which is completed online before your trip through PADI’s eLearning platform
- Confined water training — five sessions of skill development in calm, controlled conditions
- Four open water dives in the Gulf of Mexico, conducted with a PADI instructor, applying your skills in a real dive environment
Upon successful completion, you receive your PADI Open Water Diver certification card, qualifying you to dive to 18 metres (60 feet) with a certified buddy at any dive operator worldwide.

Goliath Grouper
These enormous, prehistoric-looking fish are one of the defining marine encounters on the Gulf Coast. Goliath grouper, which can grow to over 400 pounds and live for decades, are commonly found around the wrecks and reefs off Naples. Their calm, almost curious nature around divers makes for genuinely unforgettable close encounters. Seeing your first Goliath grouper hovering motionlessly in the blue water is a moment most divers never forget.
Sea Turtles
Loggerhead and green sea turtles are regular sightings on reef dives in Collier and Lee County waters. These ancient, graceful animals forage on sponges and reef invertebrates and show little concern for nearby divers when approached calmly and respectfully. Reef Fish

- Wear polarised sunglasses on the boat for comfort and eye protection
- If you are prone to seasickness, take medication the night before and again in the morning — do not wait until you feel rough

- Breathe slowly and continuously — never hold your breath underwater. This is the single most important rule in scuba diving

- Do not touch the reef or marine life — beyond the conservation importance, some species can sting or bite
