Winter diving is here for most parts of the world, but in Florida we have the advantage of warmer water than most. Currently our water temps are in the mid 60’s which is still like summer for the Northern States. If you are traveling to Florida and never dove in the Gulf of Mexico then you are missing the best diving in Florida as far as I’m concerned. Some interesting facts about the Gulf are, being it is sub-tropical the water temperature varies by almost 30 degrees over the course of a year. Average temperatures range from 96 degrees to 60 degrees fahrenheit throughout the year. With that said we undergo a variety of fish migrations that continually change the species of fish you can see throughout the year unlike in tropical waters were water temps are more consistent. Also here in Southwest Florida we don’t have the large shipping ports or cruise ships, and no large commercial operations which in return helps keep our waters cleaner than areas like Miami and the Florida Keys. Most people only think of the Keys and diving, when coming to Florida but in fact the Gulf of Mexico, especially here in Southwest Florida has so much marine diversity and a vast amount of aquatic plant life that is thriving. North Naples has the Cocohatchee River which is where we depart from for most of our dive and fishing charters. There isĀ over 10 miles of coastline in all directions before you run into a primarily dredged river system which disperses much dirtier water. This is why we don’t typically depart from Marco Island, Naples Bay or Ft. Myers because the river systems are much larger and much more polluted. So if you are coming to Florida make sure to visit Naples and plan a dive and see some of the most abundant marine life and some of the largest species of fish in the world!
